Pecci was born in Cingoli, Italy and was ordained a priest on December 19, 1942. He was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Senigallia on July 15, 1971 , where he would remain until his retirement on January 21, 1997. A prelate is a high-ranking member of the clergy who either is an ordinary or ranks in precedence with ordinaries. The word derives from Latin praelatus, the past participle of praeferre, literally, "carry before," or "to be set above, or over," or "to prefer," hence a prelate is one set over others.
