It is true that our society is evolving at an increasingly rapid pace. Our way of life is changing along with our needs. Our tastes are under transformation. In recent years the climate has also been changing in a way that is perceptible for the first time in human existence. Society is becoming aware that our way of life will impact the environment in the long term and is doing so now, as well. All these realities are configuring change. New building materials, groundbreaking techniques or simply a return to traditional ways of building, together with carefully studied systems for saving energy and making the most of the resources afforded by nature, are conforming contemporary architecture.
Because of their exposure to the media and nonstop torrents of information, architects are leading research into new formulae and proposals that respond to today`s demands: before the need to reduce production and manufacturing costs, prefabricated materials and parts are becoming increasingly popular and transportable modules are being adapted to the reality of an ever simpler, cheaper and more nomadic urban life. For their part, passive energy-saving systems, sustainable materials and the concept of designs made to last decades are reactions to the growing awareness about the environment from the local and global viewpoint.
However, because architecture is a discipline that unites technique with art, aesthetics is a component that cannot be ignored just because of these new requirements. A home has to be a place where its inhabitants feel first and foremost themselves; a place that reflects their personality and adapts to their lifestyles and needs. Whoever lives in a home has to love what he or she sees in it. This book is a demonstration of how today`s houses are integrating all of these elements. Houses built recently by well-known or up-and-coming architects are very different from the ones put up a decade ago, but the foundations on which the ones of the near future will be built are already being put in place.
