Commercial architecture allows many people to enjoy a type of architecture that is reserved for a select few in its residential version. Fashionable companies are aware of the appeal of this phenomenon and are increasing their investment in the location and design of their brands and added attraction. Furthermore, carefully planned commercial architecture also offers the opportunity to embody abstract concepts like brand values by using design to avoke specific sensation, in the same way as advertising and marketing. In this book, we wanted to present architecture involving major brands and architects, but also to throw light on the work of less well-known architects unafraid of innovation and risk.

Jewelry is commonly perceived as a beautiful piece of wearable art: stand-alone, sculptural, and aloof. However, in order to understand contemporary jewelry design, we need to view the work as we would the product of any design field: as conceptual projects, as material studies, as social commentaries, and as connections to the past. The various creations by international designers presented in this book give us an outline on current trends and developments in the field of jewelry. Their work is presented as a snapshot of individual practices, a broad sampling of innovative creations and forward-looking designers. What unites them are everyday considerations on context and production. Pictures as well as information on crafting...
Over the past fifty years, many of the innovations that have been implemented in architecture and interior design would never have seen the light of day, or would at least have taken much longer to appear if it hadn`t been for the fertile testing ground of portable architecture. There has barely been an important architect in the world for the past century that has not taken advantage of the possibilities of the tentative play and experimentation provided by the design of exhibition sites for trade fairs and world expos. In fact, this branch of architecture includes milestones such as Alvar Aalto`s Finnish Pavilion for the Venice Biennale and the German Pavilion of the 1929 Barcelona World Exposition, and such is the importance of these...

The architectural discipline of urban design falls into the broad category of landscape architecture and is applied as a social and esthetic means for interpreting the shape of cities and towns and their public spaces. The structure of a city is not the sum of its architectural shapes but the integration of these shapes into a specific and dynamic understanding of space. Public spaces become gathering points and recreational areas where neighbours can meet and contribute to socio-urban interaction. The presented projects in this book cover everything from new large neighbourhoods to the installation of street fixtures or the illumination of a small square.

The loft as we know it today is quite different from its original conception during the 1960s, when this typology of residence became popularized in cities like London, Berlin and New York. At that time, lofts were indeed reconverted warehouses that artists maintained with very few means. Today a loft can simply imply an open-plan, diaphanous and flexible space that alludes to an industrial aesthetic through exposed materials like steel and wood. New materials and design techniques have produced a new generation of lofts that have transformed it into a sophisticated asset desired by many. This selection bears proof of this growing trend, offering a wide variety of design solutions for today`s contemporary loft.

The entrance to a house acts as its visiting card. Its conception has changed enormously over the years, as has its social uses, and the space that was once considered indispensable for receiving guests and keeping the house from view on first contact - whether out of a desire to preserve privacy or a belief that it was bad taste to put living space on display - has changed to such an extent that it is on the verge of disappearing from many homes. Even in cases where there is no hall, however, its absence constitutes a type of entrance that tells us about the personality of the occupants and the layout of the space. In fact, in many cases the entrance is the axis around which the space is organized and it takes on a far greater...

Inspired by far-away places in Asia, Africa and South America, people create small oases in private homes to remind them of exotic cultures. Thus ethno design has become a new trend in interior design: tropical wood furniture, bright colors like orange and red, ethno art and accessoires such as african sculptures, were rediscovered and merged with modern interiors. Exotic elements such as buddha statues, palmtrees and animal rugs are blended with modern architecture. Today, concrete as a building material has a solid place in the designs of architects and engineers. The times when it used to be regarded as "cold" and even "brutal" are long gone now. On the contrary, the improved image of concrete is trendy and chic, but simultaneously unobtrusive and timeless. Thanks to new technologies, in recent years it has also been used both outside and inside as a building material for facades. Considered an esthetic, high-quality material which is functional yet can still be decorative, it is the building material of our age. Concrete is used and valued throughout the world and across all cultures. The Western nations, as well as Japan and South America, are famous for their sensitively designed and...
The landscape architect shapes the terrain and the space around a pre-existing construction or a developing urban or regional project. His aim is to offer the most poetic transcription of the language associated with a given architectural calculation. These professionals work with animated and inanimate physical structures which spring from geographical and social contexts, as well as from technical and economical conditions. Their imagination is the motor behind the creative, competent and playful solutions. The fifty projects presented in this book primarily show the designs of new spaces and successful restoration of others, which had previously had completely different uses, like a quarry or an industrial center. An index with...
