The book attempts a thorough investigation into how ‘the uncanny’ affects and influences important female relationships (mother-daughter, sister- sister, female friendships) in space and place as depicted in contemporary fantasy fiction. The fantasy novels on which the analysis is focused are: 'Daughters of the House' by Michele Roberts 'Beloved' by Toni Morrison 'Nights at the Circus' by Angela Carter In 1919 Freud introduced the notion of ‘the uncanny’ as a kind of neurosis or ‘that class of the frightening which arouses dread and horror in the old and long familiar’. Many literary theorists and feminist scholars have examined this notion from their own personal political and theoretical perspectives. This research on ‘the uncanny’ will start from the established theories but I personaly don't perceive ‘the uncanny’ as a type of neurosis in relation to the above-mentioned novels,my aim is to investigate ‘the uncanny’through a different lens, taking into consideration other theories including Kristeva’s ‘abjection’,Lacan’s theory of the ‘mirror phase’, Kestenberg’s theory of ‘transposition’, and Jung’s theory of the ‘collective unconscious’.
