Service began on March 27, 1976 as one of the first stations in the system. Among the entire Metro system, Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood has the highest elevation for any station. There are many commercial destinations near the station, including two supermarkets and a Home Depot. The United States Postal Service also has a large mail sorting facility that is visible from the station and is notable for being contaminated during the 2001 anthrax attacks.
