A childhood of asthma cut his schooling to three months a year. He never went to university but began filing photographs at a Wellington newspaper in 1958. That was his start in journalism. At twenty-four, he married Toni McCrea and the next day, with his bride, he left for London to join the British Broadcasting Corporation. He started as a summer-relief writer in the TV newsroom but soon rose to the position of duty editor. In 1974, Scully was recruited as the senior field producer for Canada’s latest TV network, Global. He was courted by the U.S. networks NBC and ABC but turned them down and remained in Canada to work for its other two major networks, CBC and CTV. In his career, he has won numerous international awards for news and documentaries. He was until recently senior producer for the Vision TV network’s current affairs programme, "360 Vision", and lives in Dwight, Ontario with Toni.
