He rarely travelled light, once taking 36 pieces of lugguge on a tour of the United States in 1932.

Upshur was active in Virginia state politics and later served as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of State during the Whig administration of President John Tyler. Upshur was instrumental in negotiating the secret treaty that led to the annexation of Texas to the United States and played a key role in ensuring that Texas was admitted to the United States as part of the Union. He was among six people killed when a gun exploded during an official function on board the steam warship USS Princeton.

On 13 March 1986, the mission succeeded in approaching Halley`s nucleus at a distance of 596 kilometers. The spacecraft was named after the Early Italian Renaissance painter Giotto di Bondone. He had observed Halley`s Comet in 1301 and was inspired to depict it as the star of Bethlehem in his painting Adoration of the Magi.
