Timothy Wilson Spencer (17 March 1962 - 27 April 1994), also known as the "Southside Strangler," was an American serial killer who committed four rape/murders in Richmond, Virginia in the fall of 1987. In addition, he is believed to have committed at least one previous murder, in 1984, for which a different man, David Vasquez, was wrongfully convicted. Spencer became the first murderer to be convicted on the basis of DNA evidence in Virginia and David Vasquez the first to be exonerated following conviction on the basis of contradictory DNA evidence.

Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (TRFLP or sometimes T-RFLP) is a molecular biology technique for profiling of microbial communities based on the position of a restriction site closest to a labeled end of an amplified gene. The method is based on digesting a mixture of PCR amplified variants of a single gene using one or more restriction enzymes and detecting the size of each of the individual resulting terminal fragments using a DNA sequencer. The result is a graph image where the X axis represents the sizes of the fragment and the Y axis represents their fluorescence intensity.
