They comprise about 1700 species and have a cosmopolitan distribution. They may be terrestrial, epipetric, hemiepiphytic, or epiphytic. Many are cultivated as ornamental plants. The largest genera are Elaphoglossum (600), Polystichum (260), Dryopteris (225), and Ctenitis (150). These four genera contain about 70% of the species. Dryopteridaceae diverged from the other families in eupolypods I about 100 Mya (million years ago).

He ran for governor in 1968 in the Republican Party primary in the state of West Virginia (although he was formerly a Democrat), but lost. Politically, he was a staunch admirer of ex-Alabama governor George Wallace for his ethics; Beter also drafted Wallace as the American party candidate in 1973 but numerous republicans opposed such efforts. Nonetheless, he later became a member of his Draft-Wallace committee.
